Grace’s Story

Investing In Our Workforce

An interest in research landed Grace a student work placement in the Logan Zero team at YFS. Logan Zero is collaborative campaign advocating for systems change to end homelessness in Logan. While it might not seem an obvious fit for someone completing a Bachelor of Social Work, Grace said it taught her a lot.

“I learnt about the systems side of social work, and I could see how systemic change happens. I also learnt how to use Excel more effectively, and how to present data and information.”

When Grace finished her placement, she expressed interest in working at YFS in the future. So when YFS needed workers in the Jimboomba Community Recovery Hub, Grace was one of the first people called in. The Community Recovery Hub was set up to support people impacted by the Christmas Day storms in the region. Grace helped people access emergency relief, and with information and referrals to other services.

After her stint in the Community Recovery Hub, Grace did some casual work for different teams across YFS which gave her a good insight into the organisation. When an opportunity for a permanent, part-time role came up, Grace applied for the position and was successfully appointed to the role. She now works in the Transition to Adulthood team which supports young people once they have left the out-of-home care system.

Grace says she loves working in this team. “The job aligns with my skill set and background in social work. There are a lot of development opportunities, and I feel really valued and supported.”

While Grace has put her studies on hold until 2025, working in the community sector has reaffirmed her passion for social work and given her the motivation to keep going and complete her degree.

Grace’s advice to other students on placement is to take every opportunity available. “Be like a sponge and soak everything up. Ask lots of questions. Use the opportunity to learn from people working in your field and to get broader practice knowledge.”
